Interactive Training Game Makes the Connection Between Emotional Intelligence and Success in the Workplace

Interactive Training Game Makes the Connection Between Emotional Intelligence and Success in the Workplace

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA (September 15, 2009) -- HRDQ, a leading developer of soft-skills training resources, today announced the release of Creating an Emotionally Intelligent World: A Computer-Based Game for Teams. Developed in response to growing interest and demand for training solutions on the topic, the classroom-based training game provides a unique and interactive means of making the connection between emotional intelligence and organizational success.

According to a recent survey of experts in EQ Today: “There is an intelligence based on emotion, and people who have this capacity are less depressed, healthier, more employable, stronger leaders, better decision makers, and have better relationships.” Author Barbara A. Kerr concurs. “We can no longer afford to pretend that emotions are not a part of the workplace. The good news is that we can not only measure emotional intelligence, we can improve our skills in managing our emotions and learn effective ways to cope with that difficult employee or that insensitive boss. We can also build resilience despite the inevitable stresses and changes in our lives.”

Dr. Kerr developed the computer-based game to provide an active, experiential activity for participants. “As excited as I was about presenting the concepts of emotional intelligence to executive, leadership, and management teams, it didn’t take me long to understand that a detailed PowerPoint® presentation was not an effective means for conveying either the concepts or my own enthusiasm for the possibilities for enhancing emotional Intelligence,” she says. “In playing the game with a team, participants are immersed in enjoyable experience that holds the promise of helping them make the connection between their emotional intelligence and successful achievement of their goals.”

Creating an Emotionally Intelligent World draws an well-known research in the field and specifically addresses the workplace behaviors that contribute to achieving success in the workplace, including: Awareness of the Self, Actions of the Self, Awareness of Others, Interactions with Others, and Resilience.

The goal of the game is to earn enough points to complete a puzzle before they run out of time. Given fast-paced challenges relating to emotional intelligence, players call upon critical analysis, decision making, and collaboration skills, as well as an understanding of one’s own feelings and emotions – and those of others. At the end of the game, players learn their performance statistics, including an Overall Emotional Intelligence Rating, a Team Performance Score, and an assessment of how frequently the individual players choose to act independently verses collaboratively.

Creating an Emotionally Intelligent World is available for trainers to download and use immediately. The game is a one-time purchase, and two different types of licenses make the game accessible to both small and large organizations.
