Fully immersed in a survival scenario, teams are challenged to work together to build a make-shift helicopter with only limited parts--and each other. Jungle Escape's hands-on design enables players to discover and practice critical group-process skills such as team planning, problem solving, decision making, and conflict resolution. Before they know it, they've experienced first-hand the differences between a Cohesive team and one that's Fragmented or Divergent. Participants will accomplish all of this through one of our best team building games.

Stranded in a jungle after surviving an airplane crash, teams are challenged to build a helicopter to exact specifications using only toy parts, limited access to an assembled model, and teamwork. Starting with a planning phase, they discuss how to execute the project, and then the construction begins!

When the team believes they've properly built their aircraft, the facilitator checks the helicopter for accuracy and then records the amount of time that was dedicated to planning and construction. The winner? The team that spends the most time planning is typically the team that completes the project the fastest. Following the activity, team members take part in a discussion about team dynamics, offer insights, and create an action plan for improvement.

Uses and Applications

Jungle Escape can be used as a standalone team building game or as part of a more comprehensive training program. It was developed specifically for new and intermediate work groups, but it's also an excellent refresher and energizer for more mature teams. You can also use the game to:

A prolific author, HRDQ founder, and creator of the HRDQ Experiential Learning Model, Dr. Rollin Glaser is an expert in the field of adult learning.

As a human resources executive in the 1970s, Dr. Glaser was driven to help managers understand effective practices and behavior. In 1977 he co-founded Organization Design and Development, Inc. - the company that would become HRDQ. Here, Dr. Glaser and his staff created a broad array of training solutions and learning materials for consultants, trainers, seminar creators, and participants based upon his unique experiential learning model - a cycle of learning inspired by the work of theorists Kolb, Jones, Honey, Mumford, and others. Today, HRDQ publishes over 100 programs, assessments, games, simulations, and activity collections.

In addition to his expertise in training and development, Dr. Glaser is a musician and arts advocate. He holds an EdD in adult education from Columbia University, an MEd from Northeastern University, an MA from Columbia, and a BS from Northwestern University.

Dr. Glaser has authored, co-authored, and contributed to a large number of articles, books, learning assessments, games, simulations, activities, and programs including: Jungle Escape, Interpersonal Influence Inventory, and the Negotiating Style Profile.

Christine Glaser, MEd is the former president (retired) of HRDQ. Her previous experience includes management skills training, business training, consulting, editing, and public school teaching. She holds a BS from Northwestern University and a MEd in guidance and counseling from Northeastern University.

Ms. Glaser is co-author of Managing by Design (Addison-Wesley, 1981) and several learning instruments published by HRDQ including Jungle Escape, the Team Effectiveness Profile, and the Negotiating Style Profile.
